Even Bigger
Some of you may have seen the rat that was killed in our backyard a couple months ago. It was rather large and I thought the gardener was a little crazy to suggest that there were larger rats yet…that is, until yesterday! Our gardener trapped it with his patented paint can method. We measured this rat to be 80cm from tip of tail to the tip of the nose that’s over 30 inches!! Half of the length was the tail and half the body.
Last November when I first saw this type of rat (Cane Rat) I freaked out and told Tim it was the size of a cat. He didn’t believe me. I told him it was as big as Tristan…again, he thought I was exagerating. At the time Tristan was two months old. Well…here’s the proof!

Are you sure that isn’t a possum? YIKES! Gussie said it looks like the Mouse King from the Nutcracker. I guess we should really worry if the things starts doing ballet.
Nice! Maybe you could make a Davy Crokett-style hat out of it!
OH my WORD!! That is HUGE. Thanks for the picture, it really helps put it in perspective. Tristan looks a little too happy next to that huge rodent
.
PS I love Cindy’s comment
.
It’s an ROUS!!!
Love you guys
That rat is UGLY, UGLY, UGLY!
Tristan is CUTE, CUTE, CUTE!
Timothy . . . well, you’re quite a handsome papa.
Please keep our grandchildren as far away from those rodents as you can!
By the way, how many Zambians can eat from that one rat?
Does it taste like chicken?
I can’t believe you occupy the same space as that thing!! How dreadful! And this is city life. I don’t know what is worse…rats or snakes. Love Mom Love the picture of 2 of the 3 men in your life.
I love Tristan’s expression… priceless and so cute!
You did eat it, right??
ummm….no, we did’t eat it…our gardener did!
It’s an ROUS!!!
I think it’s hilarious that Tim is holding that rat and your child at the same time. And smiling. We do gain different standards once living in Africa, don’t we?
Like your Mom, Tim, I was wondering about that thing as food! We used to eat squirrels and they were tasty….are these things related to squirrels? Are the pelts worth anything? I wonder if I can get Judy to even look at this picture? She didn’t like the snake I was trying to tame in Florida and wouldn’t look at it; this would be worse! Seeing it walk around would be scary, I must say!!
